a group of tourists lead by a tourist guide through the streets of Prague

–

Prague is a city of many faces, where each neighbourhood offers a unique experience to locals and travellers alike. Though renowned for its centuries-old architecture, the Czech capital is also gaining popularity for its trendy neighborhoods beyond the historic city center. Whether you crave history, local charm, or modern comforts, there’s a perfect spot for you to call home during your visit. Here’s our guide to Prague’s most notable neighbourhoods, complete with restaurant tips and our top hotel recommendations, to help you decide where to stay based on your specific interests. But don’t overthink it – you can easily explore all that Prague has to offer by moving from one district to the next.

Old Town (Staré Město): The Heart of Prague’s History

Why choose this neighbourhood: Central location, rich history, iconic landmarks, lively atmosphere

Old Town is where Prague’s history truly comes alive. With its cobblestone streets, Gothic architecture, and famous sights like the Astronomical Clock and Old Town Square, it’s where you have to go no matter what. You can spend hours exploring the hidden alleyways, visiting historic churches, and enjoying authentic Czech cuisine at one of the many local eateries. Old Town is great for first-timers who want to enjoy the city’s top attractions, but be prepared for crowds and potentially higher prices, especially during peak seasons.

Where to Eat in the Old Town:

  • 420 – A contemporary restaurant in the Old Town Square offering a modern twist on Czech cuisine with locally sourced ingredients.

Lesser Town (Malá Strana): Charm and Romance by the River

Why choose this neighbourhood: Picturesque setting, quieter than Old Town, close to Prague Castle

Also known as the Little Quarter, this historical area offers a peaceful retreat just across the Vltava River from Old Town. Filled with Baroque palaces, lush gardens, and charming architecture, Lesser Town feels like stepping into a fairytale. Ancient kings used to travel from Prague Castle down the so-called Royal Way – today’s Nerudova Street that you simply can’t miss (be prepared for a steep downhill on an uneven surface). Lesser Town is an ideal base for those who appreciate a serene and romantic setting while being within easy reach of Prague Castle and Charles Bridge. Don’t miss amazing local jazz bars, such as U Malého Glenna.

Hradčany (Castle District): Historic Charm at the Prague Castle’s Doorstep

Why choose this neighbourhood: Close to Prague Castle, peaceful atmosphere, stunning views

Nestled around the Prague Castle, Hradčany is a haven for history lovers. This area is home to the Castle District, where you can wander through the sprawling castle grounds, explore the vast royal gardens, and enjoy breathtaking views of the red-roofed city below. Don’t forget to visit the New World neighbourhood (Nový Svět) – it feels like traveling back in time! If you choose to stay in the Castle District, please note that some areas require a bit of uphill walking, and there are fewer dining and nightlife options compared to more central areas.

  • Kuchyň – A unique restaurant by Prague Castle where guests choose their meal from an open kitchen with classic Czech flavors and stunning views.

New Town (Nové Město): Modern Vibes and Shopping Galore

Why choose this neighbourhood: Wide range of shops and restaurants, vibrant nightlife, more spacious accommodations

Just as the name suggests, New Town is a vibrant neighbourhood that offers a more contemporary side of Prague. Stretching from Wenceslas Square to the Dancing House on the banks of the Vltava River, it is known for its modern architecture, high-end boutiques, and an eclectic mix of international and local dining options. It compensates for the lack of medieval charm with its lively atmosphere and diverse cultural offerings. New Town is your spot for that all-night-long bar experience Prague is famous for.

The name literally translates to “Winecastles,” hinting at the area’s role as the wine district of Prague. But no worries, you can get great beer here as well! In fact, one of Prague’s most famous breweries, Vinohradský pivovar, is located in Vinohrady. Žižkov: Bohemian Spirit and Alternative Vibes

Why choose this neighbourhood: Affordable accommodations, vibrant nightlife, artsy atmosphere

Žižkov is Prague’s most eclectic and bohemian neighbourhood, known for its offbeat charm, colorful street art, and lively bar scene. You’ll find a business-like mood here during the day, but it’s really at night that this area comes to life. Žižkov is said to be the home of artists, students, and locals who enjoy its status as an alternative Prague district. If you’re around, visit the iconic Žižkov Television Tower – though rated as one of the ugliest buildings in the world, it offers unparalleled views of the city, especially at night. In the summer, you’ll appreciate the local beer garden on the eastern end of the park (make sure to bring cash), while the western side hosts the famous Metronome – a monument to the changing nature of political regimes (in the picture).
