No Český Krumlov Day Trip from Prague would be complete without a visit to the magnificent Český Krumlov Castle, the second-largest castle complex in the Czech Republic and the town’s crown jewel. The castle comprises five courtyards and 11 hectares of beautifully kept royal gardens, perched dramatically on a hilltop above the Vltava River. From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Old Town’s winding streets and red-roofed houses.
As we enter the complex, don’t miss the famous bear moat, home to real bears since the 16th century. Touring the castle interiors feels like stepping back in time to the days of the Rosenberg dynasty, who once ruled here. Highlights include the lavishly decorated noble halls, the rare Baroque Theatre with its original stage machinery, and exhibitions that trace the town’s aristocratic past.
(Please note: the castle interiors and gardens are closed from November 1 to March 31. During this period, you’ll still visit the Castle Tower and Museum, or opt for a winter excursion to Chateau Hluboká on the return journey.)

Exploring works up an appetite, and what better way to refuel than with a hearty Czech lunch overlooking the river? In the warmer months, we’ll dine at a traditional restaurant right by the Vltava River, where you can watch boats drift by with the castle rising above. In winter, we’ll take refuge in a cozy medieval-style tavern tucked into one of the Old Town’s romantic alleys. Pair your meal with a local Eggenberg beer for an authentic touch.
