More than 600 years ago, Emperor Charles IV discovered a bubbling spring here, giving rise to what would become Karlovy Vary, the most famous spa city in the Czech Republic. Also known internationally as Carlsbad, it soon became a magnet for Europe’s elite. Literary giants like Goethe and musical legends like Beethoven once walked these very streets, drawn by the healing power of the Karlovy Vary hot springs and the town’s refined atmosphere.
Today, Karlovy Vary remains a symbol of wellness and sophistication. Beyond its spa culture, the city hosts world-class events such as the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF), which every July draws hundreds of actors, directors, and film enthusiasts to the iconic Hotel Thermal. Few day trips from Prague combine heritage, luxury, and culture quite like this one.
As we stroll beside the Teplá River, you’ll be surrounded by pastel-colored facades, elegant architecture, and Karlovy Vary’s grand colonnades. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to sample water from several mineral springs and see the mighty Vřídlo, a natural hot spring that sends water soaring up to 12 meters into the air.
Karlovy Vary also has its own distinctive flavors. Sample Becherovka, the city’s signature herbal liqueur, made here according to a closely guarded recipe since 1807.
If you’d like to explore another celebrated local tradition, a visit to the Moser Glassworks can be arranged in advance as an optional add-on. Founded in Karlovy Vary in 1857, Moser is renowned for its lead-free crystal, still made entirely by hand by skilled glassmakers, cutters, and engravers. The visit offers a fascinating look at the craftsmanship behind one of the Czech Republic’s most prestigious glassmaking names.
The Moser Glassworks visit is not part of the standard itinerary or included in the base tour price. It must be requested in advance, and admission is paid separately. Even without visiting the glassworks, you’ll find opportunities in Karlovy Vary to browse and purchase authentic Bohemian crystal.
Around midday, we’ll pause for lunch at a carefully selected local restaurant, where you can enjoy traditional Czech dishes, seasonal specialties, and refreshing drinks. The lunch stop is a regular part of the itinerary, giving you time to relax and recharge before continuing your exploration. Food and drinks are paid separately.
After lunch, you can enhance your day with an optional visit to Saunia Thermal Resort. Overlooking Karlovy Vary, the resort features an outdoor pool filled with natural thermal water from the town’s famous Vřídlo hot spring, a relaxation pool, eight saunas, and peaceful areas in which to unwind while enjoying panoramic views.
The Saunia visit is an optional add-on and is not included in the standard itinerary or base tour price. It must be requested in advance, and admission is paid separately.
