A Private Prague Jewish Quarter Tour, at Your Own Pace

Josefov is small. You could walk from one end to the other in ten minutes, past a handful of old buildings and a crowded cemetery, and leave without any sense of what you just saw. The Jewish Quarter doesn’t explain itself — and it holds one of the most important Jewish heritage sites in Europe, the only one to survive the war largely intact.

This private tour gives that story a voice. Over three hours, a local guide takes you through four synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery — the Old-New Synagogue and its Golem legend, the Spanish Synagogue’s gilded interior, the names and children’s drawings at Pinkas — with a stop partway at a local café, where a drink is included and there’s a moment to sit.

Because it’s private, the pace is yours. You can linger where something moves you, ask the questions you might not ask in a group of thirty, and let your guide judge how much detail is right for your family. This is heavy history, handled with care.

On this Prague Jewish Quarter tour, we’ll visit four synagogues, each unique in style, and the world-famous Old Jewish Cemetery. With the exception of the Old-New Synagogue, all of these sites belong to the Jewish Museum in Prague, the most visited museum in the Czech Republic.

Inside the Maisel Synagogue, you’ll find thousands of priceless artifacts of Jewish origin, along with the remarkable Langweil’s Model of Prague, an exhibit that transports you back to the streets of the Jewish Quarter in Prague before its 19th-century reconstruction.

The Spanish Synagogue in Prague is the youngest, but its intricate Moorish interior is unmatched in beauty. By contrast, the more modest Pinkas Synagogue houses a deeply moving memorial to the Jewish lives lost during the Holocaust.

Explore the Jewish Cemetery and the Old-New Synagogue

Dating back to the 15th century, the Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague is one of the oldest and best-preserved in the world. Its layered graves, sometimes up to ten meters deep, and tombstones covered with symbolic carvings make it a powerful place of remembrance.

After the cemetery, we’ll stop at a local café for a drink – a chance to sit down, warm up, and ask your guide the questions that have been forming as we walk.

Next, we’ll step into the legendary Old-New Synagogue, among the oldest active synagogues in Europe. Steeped in history and folklore, it’s famously associated with the story of the Golem, a mystical protector said to have been laid to rest in its attic.

Throughout the tour, your guide will share stories both heartbreaking and inspiring. Learn about the prejudice and persecution faced by the Jewish community, culminating in the Holocaust, but also about the resilience and brilliance of its members. Hear personal histories of figures such as Madeleine Albright, the Austrian artist Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, and Sir Nicholas Winton, who saved nearly 700 Jewish children from Czechoslovakia.

Amid tragedy, the Jewish community’s legacy continues to inspire. On this Prague Jewish Quarter tour, you’ll also see “Stumbling Stones,” small brass plaques placed throughout the city to honor Holocaust victims. These subtle yet powerful memorials are reminders that as long as we remember, their lives and contributions remain alive in Prague’s story.

If you’d like to extend your experience, we can also arrange a traditional Czech lunch at one of our favorite local restaurants nearby. For 35 EUR per person, you’ll enjoy a hearty meal with one drink included, featuring a set menu of authentic Czech dishes.

If you’ve booked the afternoon departure, lunch can be scheduled before the tour begins, so you’ll start your exploration of the Prague Jewish Quarter feeling energized and ready to go.

Yes, absolutely. Visiting the interiors is a core part of this tour, including multiple historic synagogues as well as the Old Jewish Cemetery. These places are essential to understanding the rich and complex story of Prague’s Jewish history.

While the price of the tour doesn’t include the entry tickets, you can:

  • Add them as an optional extra when booking the tour (€25 for adults / €9 for children)

  • Purchase them online in advance at the official Jewish Museum website

  • Or buy them on the spot before the tour begins (though we don’t recommend this option, as lines can form and delay the start of your experience)

Your guide will help ensure the process is smooth, whichever option you choose.

If you’re up for a leisurely stroll over cobblestones and uneven streets, you’ll be just fine. Expect to take around 4,000 to 5,000 steps during the tour. If that feels like too much, we can help arrange Uber or Bolt rides between stops (at your own cost). Just let us know in advance if you have mobility concerns so we can make the experience as smooth as possible.

Please note: this tour is not wheelchair accessible. If you need full accessibility, we recommend our Prague by Car Tour — it doesn’t include synagogue interiors but offers a broader overview of the city in comfort.

Yes, and it’s often a powerful, meaningful experience for families. The tour does touch on Holocaust history, so we leave it up to each family to decide what’s appropriate for their children. That said, since this is a private tour, we’re happy to adapt the tone and content to suit younger audiences. In fact, we tend to focus on hopeful, human stories rather than only the grim ones, making it both educational and emotionally resonant for kids and adults alike.

Wear comfortable walking shoes — the cobblestones around the Jewish Quarter aren’t ideal for high heels. Dress for the weather, and bring a light jacket or umbrella if needed. We run tours rain or shine, and your guide will always adapt the route if the weather changes. All public transport tickets are included, but we recommend bringing coins for public bathrooms.

This tour includes visits to religious and memorial sites, so respectful clothing is required — please make sure your shoulders and knees are covered. If you have your own kippah, it will come in handy, but no worries if you don’t; you can always borrow one in the Synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery.

A drink at a local café partway through the tour is included. Meals aren’t, but we offer an optional traditional Czech lunch either before or after your tour, depending on your chosen start time. It’s a great way to round out the experience, and we’ll take care of the reservation. The price is 35 EUR per person, and you can add it when booking.

The synagogues and museum sites are closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays, so we don’t run this tour then — the interiors are the heart of it. Any other day of the week works, and if your Prague days are tight, just tell us when you’re here and we’ll find a slot that fits.
