Celebrate the Holidays with a Festive Feast
For Czechs, the most important day of the holiday season is… the 24th! Yes, it’s Christmas Eve when the whole family gets together around the Christmas tree and waits for Baby Jesus to bring the gifts. It’s when we spend time together, observe all kinds of curious traditions, and in the evening sit down to the festive dinner of fried carp and potato salad.
That’s why it might be surprisingly challenging to find an open restaurant in Prague on Christmas Eve. Many independent restaurants close so the staff can celebrate with their families, and an ordinary walk-in dinner is hard to find. Our guide Mark learned this lesson the hard way during his first Czech Christmas. His story about experiencing Czech Christmas as an expat explains why December 24 requires more advance planning than many visitors expect.
But no worries: hotels and restaurants with a fixed festive menu are the most likely to be open, and they usually ask you to reserve in advance. Here’s our list of places whose December 24, 2026 offers we checked on their own websites, divided by neighborhood.
Last updated October 11, 2026: we checked each price and time below on the restaurant’s own website. Christmas Eve menus change every year, and more restaurants publish theirs through November, so check back. Tables can fill up well before December, so reserve early.
If you are planning your Christmas trip more broadly, start with our guide to Prague Christmas Markets 2026. For the local customs behind Christmas Eve dinner, Ježíšek, carp, potato salad, cookies, and Advent traditions, see our guide to Czech Christmas traditions. And if you are in Prague a few days before Christmas, our small-group Prague Christmas Market Tour with Czech Cookies & Traditions is a relaxed way to taste the season.
